Robert Buckland, the Tory prospective parliamentary candidate for South Swindon, has been on patrol with the police.
Chf Insp Charlie Dibble said Swindon Police had put measures in place to make sure a majority of their time was spent on patrol and invited Mr Buckland to go out with an officer.
PC Jo Phelps took Mr Buckland (pictured) on her afternoon beat in Parks and East Walcot.
"I saw the important work that these police officers do in keeping abreast of anti-social behaviour, drug misuse and public safety," said Mr Buckland.
"Residents were pleased and relieved to see a uniformed police officer on her rounds. I want to see a greater police presence on our streets at all times of the day and night."
