GAZETTE & HERALD: Water births are proving so popular Chippenham Hospital is having an additional water birth room installed.

Unit manager Hong Saint said: "There has been an increase in demand for water births and we are delighted to support mothers' choice and to be able to provide this extra facility."

Work will start on February 21 and for health and safety reasons, the existing water birth room will have to be closed down together with the unit's bathroom while builders are on site.

However, shower facilities will still be available for mums on the ward.

Ms Saint said: "The building work will take about two months. We are advising mums who want to have a water birth, between February and April 21, or patients who would not be happy using a shower, to contact one of our neighbouring maternity units."

Alternative units, which mothers are invited to look round before making a decision as to where to have their baby, are: Devizes Community Hospital on (01380) 720303, Malmesbury Community Hospital on (01666) 822657, Trowbridge Community Hospital on (01225) 711319, Princess Anne Wing, and RUH, Bath on (01225) 824447.
