ECCENTRIC goalkeeper Mark Hervin revealed his secret to how he managed to get through Saturday's match at Grantham Town good old Lemsip.

The shot stopper, 32, was feeling extremely ill on Thursday and Friday with the flu and was considering pulling out of the important Southern League Premier match.

But the stocky keeper managed to get through the match after manager Steve White gave him a course of the medical drink.

Hervin said: "I think Chalkie (White) gave me about two days worth in about two hours, but it did the trick and I played okay.

"It's not the first time I have been ill when I have played football, you just have to get on with it. I was feeling a bit rough out there.

"There is no way I could have pulled out of the game. Every match now is important and Steve wanted experience in goal.

"But don't get me wrong, Chris Astley is more than capable of coming in and doing a job for us.

"It is always difficult for a goalkeeper as he usually only has one replacement, whereas an outfield player can easily go sick for a game as he has a few different players that can replace him."

Although he made an important reaction save to stop Grantham equalising, Hervin believes the credit should go to the outfield players.

"They did tremendously out there and deserve all the credit. It is great to be where we are at the moment and we are all looking forward to the next game."

With the Bluebirds perched at the top of the league, Hervin believes the side have pulled off an amazing achievement but emphasises there are still 14 games left in the season.

"I won't talk about winning the league with any of the players as there is still a lot of the season left.

"We have to take our play on to another step, we have done well for 28 games but have to keep it up.

"We have to be consistent and can't afford a bad patch or all our hard work so far will count for nothing.

"If we do lose a game we need to bounce back straight away."
