GAZETTE & HERALD: WILLIAM Street in Calne will have its weight restriction lifted to allow lorries to drive down to the Newcroft Gardens building site.

Wiltshire County Council recommended that the previously experimental order of a lifted weight restriction be made permanent despite Calne Town Council rejecting the idea.

A report from director of environmental services, George Batten, to Wiltshire County Council said: "There are potential adverse consequences if lorry traffic serving the housing development site off Swaddon Street has to travel via Lickhill Road/North Street."

Coun Peter Dolman said he felt the decision let down Calne Town Council.

"The decision by Wiltshire Highways not to reinstate the weight restriction in William Street, Warren Crescent and Luckett Way can be seen to be perverse in so far as it goes against wishes of the town council.

"How can the sight of articulated lorries fighting their way through hordes of school children in Williams Street or Hungerford Road be acceptable to the average parent?"

Calne town councillor John Ireland said this justified his and colleague Coun Ellie Bland's stance against a weight restriction.

"All along we have said it's the commonsense route to the building site. It avoids the town centre and makes sense," he said.

"Lorries are told not to traverse it during opening and closing times of the schools."
