it was suggested that we keep to black bags for waste, but limit the number collected. I did a quick count along my road: half of the households had reduced their waste to about half a bin-full; but others had enough to fill two wheelie bins and more.

You could try to enforce a limit on the amount the binmen collect, but would leaving the overspill at the side of the road be a good thing? A rigid bin provides an effective visual aid for rubbish volume.

In conversations with residents in my ward, I find that there is concern about the health hazard of black bags left at communal collection points. Hard bins are less liable to attack by animals and more hygienic than bags if meat waste is wrapped well. Some people put out their bags before their holiday, leaving them on the pavement for nearly two weeks. Much better in a wheelie bin, surely?

We have been lucky until now that anything left by the kerb is taken away. This will have to change as we run out of landfill sites and become liable to fines if targets are not reached. We must recycle more and minimise the amount of waste we put out.

So far we have only read the opinions of those opposed to the proposals let us hear from those of you who support these ideas, too.
