Having lived in the Devizes area for all of my 37 years, I am perturbed upon returning after four weeks away to see that the County Council intends to make the towpath between London Road and New Park Road an illuminated thoroughfare.
As rightly mentioned in your letters column (January 27) this footpath is not suitable for everybody. This part of the towpath has previously been promoted as a cycle path.
Any pedestrian walking along this section of the towpath who has been confronted by a cyclist can vouch that it is not suitable for further promotion as a way of travelling about the town.
I feel sure that the inhabitants of London Road would be outraged at the idea that their back garden be flooded with light from the canal.
As a resident who has been struck by a cyclist travelling across an area where cycling is prohibited, suitable lighting along the footpaths across the Green would be a better use of any funds that may be available.
