SAM PARKIN'S continued 'anonymity' puzzles Andy King although he is quite happy for his leading scorer to remain Wiltshire's worst kept secret.
The 23-year-old netted both Town's goals in Saturday's 2-1 win over Barnsley, taking his tally for the campaign to 17.
King is both flabbergasted and delighted that he is not having to fight off offers for his star striker.
He said: "I find it hard to believe. If he continues in the vein then you can't score 20 goals every year and not be noticed.
"This boy is doing it year in and year out. He's a goalscorer."
King knows that keeping Parkin at the County Ground will depend heavily on continual progression.
He said: "What I have to do is convince him and try to achieve something here to keep Sam Parkin happy because he should play at a higher level. That applies to some of the others too.
"At the moment he's happy, he's scoring goals and we're in a challenging position again.
"Last year we had a fantastic year that kept him happy and if we can do the same again or get on the verge of it, convince him that this club is always looking to progress, then maybe we can keep him.
"If an irresistible offer comes in then that's out of my control.
"What I do know is that it would be a sad day for this football club.
"They haven't had a goalscorer of his regularity here since day dot.
"He has proven in three years that he is a phenomenal striker with a goal record to back that up.
"If I lose Sam Parkin then I lose the heart of my team in goals. I don't think about losing him.
"Every manager is looking for goalscorers. Parkin is not a flash in the pan, it isn't just one good year he's had.
"He's a very good striker, the best in this division."
Parkin's double blast against Barnsley lifted Town into seventh spot, just two points adrift of the play-off zone.
King, who was again linked with the Portsmouth job over the weekend, said: "Not many teams have put a string of three wins together this season, we have, and I've told the lads we can't sit on it we have to take it on to Torquay.
"Whoever can put a six game run together has an opportunity."
