I am shocked by your article about the proposed day centre increases (Wednesday, February 9). By my calculations the proposed increases in day centre charges can equal a swingeing 94 per cent increase in council tax for some of the most vulnerable in our society.
A single pensioner living in a band A property currently pays £562.39 a year council tax. Assuming they attend day centre once a week, if these proposals go through they will be expected to pay an extra £1,092 a year, equivalent to an increase of 94 per cent in their current council tax. By comparison, an increase of 15 per cent in their council tax would only add up to £84.36. Is this how the Tories balance the budget while keeping council tax increases down?
I for one am not happy at this attack on those least able to pay and least likely to fight back.
