JEAN Bird and Dave Snell's bid for glory in the national indoor mixed championships is over in the pairs but they are still involved in the fours.
Despite leading for most of their last 32 match in Northampton in the pairs against Kathy Day and Roger Hendrick (Prince Arthur) they went down 20-17 to the Gillingham, Kent, duo.
Bird and Snell led from the outset and at one stage were six shots up but were pegged back in the latter stages.
They were one shot up at 17-16 going into the 20th and penultimate end but dropped a three and then a single on the last to go out of the competition.
However, they had better fortunes in the fours last night when they teamed up with Wendy Anderson and Kevin Embling beating Desborough 21-17.
They made the perfect start against the Maidenhead quartet skipped by Alan Price collecting two threes on the first two ends and always held the upperhand.
They were 13 shots up at 16 ends and coasting before being pegged back over the last few ends.
Snell's rink will now play Plymouth in the last 16. They came back from 15-1 down to beat Graham Shadwell's quartet from Clarrie Dunbar by a shot on the last end.
