YOUR SWINDON YOUR VERDICT: THE majority of Swindonians chose their own town as their favourite place to shop for clothes.
In spite of the Your Swindon Your Verdict survey result showing that one in three people think a better range of shops would most improve the town centre, more than 50 per cent of people still chose Swindon as the place they most like to shop for clothes. Fifty four per cent of people opted for Swindon with other shopping destinations, such as Bristol and Bath lagging far behind with no more than 15 per cent each.
But Dennis Grant, pictured, chief executive of Swindon Chamber of Commerce, said that the figure showed the town centre needs redeveloping. "We do need to bring up the standards of shopping in Swindon," he said. "We have got all the brands you would expect to find but we need to do more than that.
"It is the whole environment that makes the difference. You don't go shopping purely to buy something, you go for the experience.
"Swindon town centre needs to become a destination."
Fifteen per cent of people said they liked to shop in Bristol, ten per cent in Bath and six per cent in Cheltenham.
Two per cent said Oxford and other answers included Reading, London, Cirencester, Cardiff and Birmingham. Several people said they used the internet or mail order for their shopping.
