A FRENCH exchange group for youngsters is desperately short of Swindon volunteers.

Belaf Language Study Holidays, which has its offices in Calne, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

But a lack of interest from Swindon families could dampen the celebrations.

So far, husband and wife team Carole and Tim Browne have heard from just one family.

Normally the pair would expect a dozen Swindon families to sign up.

Mrs Browne stressed that while most children take part in an exchange it's not a requirement.

"If Swindon families only want to take a French child in for a fortnight that's not a problem," she said.

"We'll pay £115 a week to those families."

Every year Belaf allocates 300 French children to families in England.

And, while interest in places like Bournemouth has never been higher, it's lacking in Swindon.

Mrs Browne added: "I can't understand why this is so. Swindon is a nice town. It would be an ideal place for visitors."
