15332/2GAZETTE & HERALD: CHIPPENHAM police are warning that mini motorbikes and petrol scooters can only be used on private land.
In just two months, 29 complaints have been made about the scooters, known as go-peds, and mini motorbikes being used on the street.
That is about one complaint every two days.
But the machines are illegal to use on roads, pavements and car parks .
Acting Sergeant Allan George at Chippenham police said: "We've noticed a huge increase in the number of calls.
"It's far more than we would normally expect for this period and it reflects the fact that these bikes and scooters are causing a degree of distress.
"We are happy for them to be used but we just want people to be safe and use them legally without disturbing others."
To be used on the road, go-peds would require an MOT, rear registration plate, tax, brakes, horn, lights and seat belts.
"It is not possible for them to satisfy these legal requirements they are not safe to be used on the highway," Sgt George said.
Police have powers to report anyone found illegally using go-peds and they can seize the vehicles if riders cause disturbance or anti-social behaviour.
Riders charged with driving offences can be fined and receive points on their driving licence even if they are not old enough to hold one.
Sgt George said: "Our aim is to improve the quality of life for people disrupted by their use and prevent unnecessary accidents.
"The only legal area for them to be used is on private land with permission."
