GAZETTE & HERALD: CORSHAM Town Hall's clock that was taken down two weeks ago to be refurbished will cost an extra £1,000 to fix.
It is in a worse condition than first thought and will now cost £4,000 to repair. The internal mechanisms have been destroyed by rust and erosion because the last time it underwent maintenance was in 1993.
But when it comes back in three to six months time the clock, which has not been taken down for 25 years, will be illuminated so it glows at night. It will also have gold leaf detail highlighting the Roman numerals and hands.
The clock was put up over 100 years ago and for 40 years the council discussed illuminating it, but in 1939 plans to do this were abandoned.
In 1982 the clock stopped when snow landed on it and the hands froze and some years later it stopped again when a bird nested in it.
Town clerk David Martin said: "People walking in the High Street automatically look up and see it but with it gone people have missed it.
"We do want it back as soon as possible because the building looks a bit odd without it.
"It's over 100 years old and it's a very important part of the town hall."
The clock is getting its makeover in Cornwall, paid for by council tax.
