A SURVEY just published by Salisbury City Centre Management has found that Salisbury presented a more positive picture than other parts of the country when it came to retail sales over Christmas and New Year.

December's footfall for Salisbury was up 20 per cent on November, similar to the south west's increase of 21.8 per cent.

Figures showed that 72 per cent of retailers gave a good or better rating to their sales, only six per cent down on December 2003.

However, the survey acknowledges, the results could be distorted by the abundance of pre-Christmas sales.

Car park statistics showed an overall average occupancy of 82 per cent.

And Salisbury Cathedral's visitor numbers were up by five per cent on December the previous year and 11 per cent for 2004 overall compared to 2003.
