THINGS could be very different for Pewsey if they had converted all their penalties this season.

Saturday was a familiar story for Vale with a missed penalty, missed opportunities and a late lapse in concentration that allowed Graham Toonley to score and cost much-needed points.

Defender Luke Sharpes hit the crossbar from the spot kick when the scores were tied, the fourth penalty kick that has been missed by Vale this season.

The defeat leaves Pewsey fourth from bottom and still in the relegation zone.

With Pewsey travelling to high flyers Fairford on Saturday, manager Steve Wootton is still licking his wounds after yet another day where a good performance brought home zero points.

He said: "Fairford are a good side but they are a little inconsistent and I will be hoping for a point there."

Wootton is delighted that midfielder Steve Bush will be back from a suspension to take on Fairford.

The manager was left bitterly disappointed with the manner of Saturday's defeat.

"If we had taking our chances we could have easily won the game. That has been the case so many times this season," said Wootton.

"I have to try and keep their confidence up, if we were playing badly every game then we would have a problem. We are just waiting for a bit of luck."

Vale had the best of the first half although they almost conceded in the 12th minute when Danny Seaward cracked a shot against the crossbar.

Then came the first of the many chances for the Vale at the other end when Dave Marfleet was through but he pulled his shot wide.

Home keeper Danny Holcroft pulled off a double save to ensure the scores stayed level.

With better finishing by the Pewsey strike force they could have easily been in the lead. In the 41st minute Martin Churchward was unlucky when he rose high at the far post to head a Tom Ritchie corner against the angle of the crossbar.

Pewsey keeper Holcroft was nearly caught out when he called for the ball and was unable to claim it but he redeemed himself when he made a great save from the follow up.

In the 59th minute, as Pewsey continued to push forward, Phill Penning won the ball and set up Marfleet for another shot on goal but again in the poor conditions he pulled his shot wide.

Then came the missed penalty when on the 80th minute Andy Youngsam, who had only just come on, was brought down in the box following his lively run towards goal.

But Luke Sharpes struck his kick against the Henley crossbar.

Henley finally broke the deadlock when the defence failed to clear the ball away in the packed goalmouth and Toomley scrambled it over the line.
