SWINDON'S CRUMBLING SCHOOLS: Swindon Council is building seven new schools in North Swindon under a PFI Private Finance Initiative.

As part of the Northern Schools Development, Hreod Parkway School, which is currently split between two sites either side of Akers Way will be rebuilt on its present south site.

And Moredon Infants and Junior Schools will be amalgamated and rebuilt north of Akers Way.

In addition a new primary school will be built at Haydon End Lane, Haydon Wick, and four other schools will be built on a 32 acre learning campus at Priory Vale.

Building work on the development will be carried out by Equion, a division of John Laing PLC, as part of a £97million contract.

Andrew Fleet, headteacher of Hreod Parkway, said: "The wonderful thing about PFI is that all the different departments of the council have worked together with the school to design a state of the art new school.

"There will be a central domed atrium at the centre of the school then wings coming from it that each contains different specialist facilities.

"There will also be an external amphitheatre, a sports hall, a drama studio and television and radio studio.

"The school will have its own lake in the grounds and there will be wireless technology throughout the school."
