COUNCIL cuts to public transport will damage an already rock-bottom service, according to the Lib Dems. The council plans to cut £238,000 in support for bus services and concessionary fares as part of its £10m savings to keep council tax down.
But the Liberal Democrats say the cuts will mean worse services or higher fares at a time when the council is already rated bottom out of more than 80 authorities inspected across the country.
"I would have thought it physically impossible to do worse than rock bottom in transport policy ratings, but the Tories are doing their very best to achieve it," said Coun Stan Pajak, the Liberal Democrats' spokesman on transport issues.
The cuts, scheduled to be approved at Monday's full council meeting, involve removing £38,000 of subsidies to bus services and £200,000 from the money bus companies get to support concessionary fares.
Coun Jemima Milton, the council's lead member for environment and transport, said the council's poor rating on transport was because of delays on specific projects and did not reflect other successes.
