GAZETTE & HERALD: TOWN councillor Cathy Bowyer is on a mission to have the streets of Calne cleaned-up after parents at Holy Trinity School complained about the amount of dog mess in the town.
Coun Bowyer, who is ward member for Marden, said that when she recently walked her daughters to Holy Trinity School from Fynamore Gardens through Bentley Woods they counted 17 different piles of dog dirt.
"It is about time something is done to sort out the problem, it's atrocious and a health issue," she said.
"Kids are going to be ill. They will tread in it. It can cause vomiting and diarrhoea as well as potentially more serious illnesses.
"Several parents have approached me as a councillor regarding this issue with at least eight mums in one week.
"There has been a lot of mess outside the school gates recently but the town council have said it's a district issue so they cannot clear up the dog mess."
Coun Bowyer also said parents from the school had been given letters warning them of the problem by the school.
"As a town council we need to negotiate with the district council and, through a process of devolution, gain power so that the town council can address the issue and clean up promptly."
She also said there are not enough dog bins and there must be more patrols to ensure culprits are caught.
