A SCHOOL is thinking more about the environment than core skills like reading and writing, claims a Swindon councillor.
Earlier this week the head of Covingham Park Infants fended off accusations from some parents that the school is taking it's eco-policy too far.
Moyra Holmes has banned all 148 children from bringing sugary drinks and food packaging on the site.
And the school's curriculum has been specifically geared to highlight green issues. While many parents support the green tactics, a few have expressed concerns.
Now Coun Dale Heenan (Con, Covingham and Nythe) has waded into the debate.
He says he has been contacted by six parents, who have all expressed concern over the decision to make children drink water during breaks.
"I have met one of the parents and I have spoken to half a dozen in all.
"From what I have heard it would seem like common sense to allow pupils to bring in squash or some other kind of fruit drink.
"I totally agree, however, with a ban on cola drinks.
"Covingham Infant School has an eco policy. But schools are there to teach children. What is happening to their reading and writing?"
Meanwhile, Coun Heenan said that he would be putting pen to paper and requesting a discussion with Mrs Holmes.
He added: "I shall also be talking to the Local Education Authority."
Owing to the half-term break we were unable to contact Mrs Holmes.
But she previously told us that the majority of parents seem happy with the policy.
