I SAW the two men driving the invalid carriage through Devizes (Gazette, February 10). It amused me and others in town. They certainly were not a danger to life or limb, the rationale behind the drink driving laws.

The concerned motorist who flagged down the police obviously needs to get a life but of more concern than that individual is the response of the public and magistrates.

An armed response unit and then a second car to deal with two men having fun and harming no one.

The police are not protecting the public, only wasting their time and our money.

As for the magistrates, they have demonstrated either an amazing lack of imagination and intelligence or, more worryingly, vindictiveness.

Do they not understand why the drink driving laws were introduced? Are they unable to differentiate between driving a car weighing tons at 30 plus mph and an invalid carriage weighing considerably less at four mph?

Or is it possible that Tom Hodkin and William Taylor were found guilty of having a laugh and not behaving like automatons?

A SINCLAIR
