On the Friday before Sunday's fixture Devizes U15 team manager Roy Farrant thought that he would have to call the game off.

As a result of two school ski trips and a late call up of six players for a county fixture, he had lost ten of his normal starting line up.

James Dazeley, Tim Brain, Nick Farrant, James Holden, Aaron Giles and Matt Kelly all gamely volunteered to play two games over a four-hour period and the crisis was averted.

Not surprisingly a totally restructured Devizes team started tentatively and were down five points almost from the first move of the game.

The powerful Keynsham back line created an overlap out-wide and a simple try for their wing. Showing excellent character the Devizes boys dug deep and in spite of continuous pressure managed to hold out a very motivated and talented Keynsham side until half time.

With the wind at their backs in the second half and some astute kicking from full back James Dazely and stand off Matt Bevan, Devizes started to gain territorial advantage and it was Keynsham's turn to show their resolute defence.

The impasse was finally broken five minutes from the end of the game by an outstanding try by Tim Brain who, following a neat switch move with Matt Bevan, ran fully 40 metres to score an unconverted try wide out.

As the seconds ticked down a draw looked likely, probably have been a fair reflection of the game, but there was a final twist.

From an innocuous looking maul on the Devizes ten metre line number eight James Holden broke down the blind side and beat half a dozen defenders in an astonishing 60 metre sprint to score. The missed conversion signalled the end of the game, leaving Devizes jubilant and Keynsham shell-shocked.

Incredibly after having already played an exhausting game in the morning six players went on to play an influential part in a county development squad game against Somerset. Two tries for Wiltshire by Tim Brain and one each by James Holden and Aaron Giles were the icing on the cake for this excellent day for Devizes youth rugby.
