IT came as a shock to read MJ Warner's letter heaping lavish praise on Conservative governments of the 80s and 90s. Those years were certainly a time of progress and growth. We are more used to his peevish criticism of Tory successes.
We had a sensible MP living locally and a prosperous economy resulting from the taming of trade union bullies.
The rapid growth of employment in our town was achieved in spite of bitter infighting and lack of progress in the shambolic council chamber.
In your excellent report on the growth and decline of the British Motor Corporation and state owned British Leyland, Coun Montaut, admitted being one of the militant shop stewards who caused continual strikes over pay, which ultimately ruined the company.
It is sad to see some of these wreckers still serving on Swindon council.
