GAZETTE & HERALD: MEMBERS of Calne Town Council are campaigning for safer roads following a number of accidents and near misses in the town.
The town council has proposed a traffic survey be carried out at Abberd Way, Lickhill Road and North Street.
Town councillor Paul Atkinson, chair of the planning and economic regeneration committee, bemoaned new Government legislation, which has made the introduction of traffic calming schemes more difficult.
"We went through a huge consultation programme and thought we would put traffic calming in a particular place but now you cannot just have one traffic calming measure but need two," he said.
"What we are trying to do is put in some mobile speed traps and we are getting some speed assessments done along Abberd Way, Lickhill Road and North Street."
The moves come less than a month after seven-year-old Ellie Horne was knocked down by a pickup truck while crossing the road causing anger from residents and councillors that nothing had been sorted out.
Inspector David Cullop said the police would be carrying out a traffic survey using a metro count which can tell what type of vehicle has passed by, at what speed and how many vehicles pass by at different times of the day.
He added this could assist the council's application for traffic calming measures.
"It can tell us if there is a problem and when we should be deploying our services," said Insp Cullop.
Coun Atkinson also said plans for a crossing point at Curzon Street was looking promising. He said the application missed the cut off point for this financial year but the council had a strong case for one and could start public consultation soon.
