ELDERLY women have fallen prey to pickpockets while out shopping in the town centre.
Police are warning shoppers to be on their guard following at least five incidents in Regent Street and The Parade in broad daylight when purses were taken from zipped up handbags.
A police spokeswoman said: "Swindon town centre is a safe shopping environment and we do not wish to alarm shoppers. However, we want to make them aware that pick-pockets are about and to be extra careful.
"Pickpockets will look for an opportunity, such as elderly women, someone who has just withdrawn money from the bank, someone who has their hands full looking after a small child or someone holding their friend's coat whilst she tries on clothes.
"If you are out shopping with a friend look out for each other.
"You may spot something your friend doesn't. People are urged to be vigilant, to keep their hands on bags and purses when out shopping.
"If you are a victim of a pickpocket, cancel your bank cards immediately to stop thieves using them.
"Remember, those who commit this type of crime have no regard to the harm and stress they cause.
"They have no concerns for other people's feelings or property, so beware."
The police do not have descriptions or know how many suspects they are dealing with. They are not sure whether these offences are connected, however, the possibility is not being ruled out.
Pickpockets have also struck in Wootton Bassett. This week two shoppers were victims of a handbag thief on market day.
A woman had the contents of her bag, valued at £65, stolen while shopping at the weekly High Street market.
And at the town's post office a shopper's handbag was stolen after she placed it in a cupboard behind the counter.
Earlier this week we reported four violent robberies involving elderly women when thieves tried to snatch handbags.
