Local Friends of the Earth members attended a national rally and lobby of Parliament, calling on the Government for the right to have GM-free crops and food.
Former Environment Minister Michael Meacher addressed the rally, detailing the need for strict laws to prevent GM contamination and liability laws to ensure that the biotech companies pay the costs if and when contamination of neighbouring crops occurs or of any other damage.
The lobby was a crucial reminder of the concerns surrounding GM crops and food coming at a time when the Government is in the process of deciding what rules are needed in order to allow GM crops to be grown in the UK, alongside conventional and organic crops.
