GAZETTE & HERALD: TWO cowboy builders thought to have been operating nationally have been spotted in Chippenham.
Police on patrol in the Woodlands Road area on Thursday chased the tricksters who had been offering to carry out roof repairs.
Officers say the conmen were attempting to charge up to £1,500, but in exchange were simply painting asbestos roof tiles in red fence paint.
A police spokesman said: "They are charging for shoddy workmanship and we would like to hear from anyone who has been approached by them.
"They are thought to be active nationally and in the Somerset and south Gloucestershire area, particularly to elderly people."
The pair also offer to repair tyres, clean drainpipes and do gardening jobs, charging extortionate amounts.
A white Ford Transit van was recovered in Sheldon Road and is thought to be connected with the men.
A red Suzuki quad bike was found inside and police are making inquiries because they think it is stolen.
The first man is described as between 25 and 30 years old, with short black hair and a black beard, about 5ft 10in tall, wearing a blue jacket and jeans. His pal is described as aged 16 to 20, thin, wearing an old style green Parker.
Anyone with information about the men should contact PC Richard Tottle or WPC Ellen Rogers at Chippenham Police Station on (01249) 654455.
