GAZETTE & HERALD: CHIPPENHAM'S historic Western Arches are one step closer to being lit up this week after the town council agreed to pay for the maintenance costs.
It is now hoped Brunel's arches could be illuminated by the end of the year.
Chippenham Town Council has decided to commit £2,150 each year to pay for things such as new light bulbs and cleaning.
Coun Philip Alnatt said all the funding was now in place and technical tenders were now underway.
"I am delighted that the town council has supported this scheme," he said. "It means we will have a beautiful railway arch in plenty of time for the bicentenary celebrations of its architect in 2006.
"My guess is that the lighting will be in place for the next autumn/winter season."
The plans are part of a £300,000 scheme to revamp the New Road area.
