TROWBRIDGE LEAGUE: HEYTESBURY finally celebrated their first league win of the season, with new boss Steve Bidgood sealing a shock 3-1 Division One triumph at third-placed Seend United.
Hammered 7-3 at home by Seend just a month previously, the troubled villagers, with Dave Gonzolas' long range effort and Sean Holton's penalty erasing Aaron Richardson's opener before Bidgood struck, ended their opponents' unbeaten eight-match run under new chief Matt Pearce.
Fellow strugglers The Stiffs almost stole Heytesbury's thunder in their home game at Division Three hot-shots Lavington. Playing throughout the first half with 10 men Adrian Giles' outfit led at the break through Simon Blagdon.
Ironically, the arrival from Liverpool of Brian Waffer to make up the numbers only served to sink Stiffs in the first 10 minutes of the restart, with Lee Corbin (2) and James Campbell on target.
Most sporting team of the afternoon were Broughton Gifford Reserves who were thrashed 9-1 as The Deverills regained top spot in Division Two on goal difference. Starting with only nine players and conceding first half goals to Julian Uphill, Micky Payne (penalty) and Richard Daly, Gifford finished with seven players through injuries. Adie Evans, Daly, Jason Greatley, an own goal and two more from Payne completed Gifford's misery. Dave Keen netted their consolation.
Top individual performance came from North Bradley Saints substitute Scott Askew. With Richard Bliha and Carl Davies adding singles, Askew scored four in the last half hour as Saints bounced back from an interval deficit by Dave Appleyard with a 6-1 thumping of Frome Town Sports.
Two of Saints' title rivals left it late to claim the spoils.
Champions Broughton Gifford reversed a 2-1 defeat at Warminster Town Reserves in October thanks to a last minute disputed penalty which earned Andy Parmenter a red card.
John Hubbard tucked the spot kick away after substitute Steve Burns had erased Louis Sparey's opener for relegation threatened Town, who have only three matches left and have picked up only two points from seven games.
Rudloe also gained revenge, courtesy of Paul Newbury and Stuart Tutty, in the last 10 minutes at Trowbridge United, who staged three recoveries through Dean Murden (2) and Micky Baggs' penalty to wipe out arrears from Liam Ralph, Jason Walsh and Matt Dancey.
The most improved side are Bradford Town Reserves. A goal down to neighbours United, Jon Phillips' Division Three newcomers picked up their ninth point from six matches, with Danny Hurkett, Jason Povey, with a free kick, and Gavin Targett reversing an earlier 3-1 local derby defeat.
And the days of basement side Castle Combe A leaking goals galore appear to be ending.
Although going down 2-0 to second half goals from recent signing Neil Jarbey and Shaun Jefferies as promotion hopefuls Calne Eagles collected their first win in six games, Combe again showed a big improvement.
The most difficult team to beat are The Lamb Inn. That is not good news for Division Two title chasers Blue Circle and The Deverills who still have to face Colin Dicks' draw specialists after a sixth stalemate of the season in a 0-0 clash at championship favourites CS Filos.
If top flight Seend produced a disappointing performance than it was not much better for defeated trio Division Two trio FC Northbridge, Steeple Ashton and Westbury United A. James Starr opened the scoring for Northbridge but his second was little consolation as Paul Smith (2), Ben McKee, Stuart Neate and Dan Cox swept Bratton to a 5-2 revenge win.
Ashton edged closer to the drop, failing to reply to goals from Rob O'Harrow, Lee Jackson, Chris Bishop and Mark James for Seend United Reserves while Westbury, with a fifth minute goal disallowed, were left with a promotion struggle after John Harris' 46th minute winner for Hilperton.
Earlier a Stuart Barber penalty had levelled Neil Hannaford's effort for Hilperton.
Rowde Sports and Apetito, whose keeper Liam Newble missed a penalty, also had disappointing performances. After three straight victories, Rowde failed to push St Andrews with Ewan Maynard and two more from Dave Greenwood, including a penalty, carving out a comfortable 3-0 double.
A third hat-trick of the season for Steve Coombes and singles from Jamie Moth, Dave Cooper and Dean Gumm gave Trowbridge Wanderers a 6-2 win over Apetito. Brendon Leitch and Nigel Penelhum replied.
Rudloe Reserves beat Frome Town Sports A 3-1. George Bentley and unsung striker Luke Wolf (2) netted, with Kirk Boobyer registering an own goal.
Heytesbury's league result was matched in the Knockout Cup by Semington Magpies, the Division Three side becoming the fourth giantkillers of the competition with a 2-1 win over Division Two Castle Combe Reserves, who had goal-scorer Marcus Young sent off in bizarre circumstances. Young, cautioned in the first half, was substituted at the break but became embroiled in a last minute fracas and was sent off for coming onto the the field without permission.
First half goals from Bobby Mitchell, from a Simon Hillman free kick, and Dan Rimmer, from a a Dan Phillips corner, had put Magpies on their way to a home third round tie with top flight Bradford United.
Two goals from Dave Birch and singles from Simeon Mills, Steve Collett, Wesley Frith and a Colin Garbutt penalty - his first goal for the club - shattered Hilperton United Reserves' hopes of a shock as Dynamo West End earned a trip to Bratton in the quarter finals. Lee Williamson replied for Hilperton.
