HAVING just read the Wiltshire Times I read with horror and some amusement that our elected representatives are to convert the old public convenience at Town Bridge into a pigeon loft.

The Pigeon Control Advisory Service say that by doing this the pigeons may move away. And the accent is on may. PICAS also say that the council should arrange for the sale of high quality grain nearby to improve the pigeons' diet. Why? Grain soaked with poison would be the best answer to that.

To make matters worse they propose to employ a "Polish speaking" pigeon warden whose sole purpose seems to be is to dissuade the elderly Polish ladies from feeding the birds. These elderly ladies should have learned a bit of English by now, such as No. Do not feed the pigeons. They seem to be able to buy bread and seed OK.

Why do we need such a warden when we have the police and community wardens, all of whom are supposed to be there to uphold the law of the land and apprehend lawbreakers, and these Polish ladies are just that, lawbreakers.

Let them feed the pigeons in Warsaw, Krakow and Gdansk. I am sure they will be most welcome.

We, the taxpayers of the town, have to pay for all of this so yet another millstone around our necks. What planet do these town and district councillors live on?

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

WHAT a waste of our money is being proposed to be spent on wild pigeons and paying also for a PICAS advisor on the problem.

Their expert advice will encourage the problem. It would be interesting to know what qualifications are required to become a member of PICAS. Surely there are many farmers who would give the necessary advice. What about the pigeon awareness day (oh please). We are all aware every time we are in the town.

Will the warden be provided with a translator more expense. How will he or she do what others have failed to do? Why can't the people we employ get rid of, not encourage, it and get back to a cleaner town and stop wasting money?
