CAMPAIGNERS bidding to build a nature centre were given a boost on Wednesday night, but their battle is far from over.
West Wiltshire District Council agreed to restore the lease it had given to the Hope Nature Centre on land at Southwick Country Park, subject to a series of conditions.
The centre, which would provide jobs for 40 young people with learning difficulties and be used by tourists and local residents, already has planning permission.
Its trustees say they have had to overcome an increasing number of bureaucratic hurdles.
Treasurer Robert Hall added: "Each time we get closer to meeting the demands this council finds something more to get in the way." The council withdrew the lease for the 12-acre site in September, claiming the trustees needed to provide clearer financial information. The trustees say the wrangle has put many of the grants they have secured at risk.
On Wednesday members backed a motion from Cllrs Jeff Osborn and Sarah Content to restore the lease, "subject to all the necessary conditions listed in the cabinet papers". The vote means the trustees must still clarify some details, but the council has pledged its support.
