DR MARK Everard has been making a name for himself during the winter months with plenty of specimen roach from the Avon around Great Somerford.
During another recent outing to the river at Chippenham Everard had another outstanding day, with specimen fish of three different species.
In a session of just 90 minutes he took a fine roach of 2lb 2oz, a specimen dace weighing 1lb and finished off with an excellent chub weighing 5lb 4oz. He took his catch on feeder fished bread flake fished over liquidised bread.
Chew Valley Lake was in prime form for the latest pike fishing session and it was an outstanding day for Wayne Adcock, who had a day to remember.
Fishing with a variety of baits and methods he landed three specimen fish. His top catch was a fine 37lb 12oz specimen which fell to a lure. He added other fish of 30lb 11oz and 25lb. He took these fine fish on smelt and mackerel baits. Later in the week two more pike weighing over 30lb were taken.
The Wednesday open match at Ivy House Fishery produced reasonable weights and proved to be a golden day for Veals matchman Chris Derrick.
He drew the golden peg and duly proceeded to carry off top prize with a catch of small carp weighing 18lb 4oz, worth nearly £2,000. He took his catch on short pole-fished soft pellets on a 14 hook for a comfortable victory.
Runner-up was Veals matchman Mark Johnson with a carp catch weighing 13lb, also taken on pole-fished pellets. Ivy House matchman Steve Collins was third with a mixed bag weighing 12lb 12oz.
Elick Payne, of Chippenham, scored another convincing win in the Ivy House Open match.
He took an all-carp catch weighing 21lb 6oz, taking his catch alternating with long and short pole-fished pellets on a 14 hook.
Steve Jones, of Ivy House, was second with a carp catch weighing 13lb 13oz, taken on pole-fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook. He was followed by Pete Connor, of Ivy House, with a mixed catch weighing 9lb 8oz, with Gary Fox, of Ivy House, in fourth spot with a mixed bag weighing 9lb 6oz.
Roach fed well in the Avon open match on Sunday on the Avon at Melksham.
Kevin Dicks, of Bathampton, won with an all-roach catch weighing 13lb 12oz, taken on stick-floated casters on an 18 hook.
Kevin Boltz, of Bristol, pushed the winner all the way to finish a close runner-up with a roach catch weighing 13lb 8oz, also taken on stick-floated casters on an 18 hook. He was followed by veteran Jim Escott, of Melksham, with an all-bleak catch weighing 8lb 11oz, taken on whip-fished red maggots on an 18 hook.
Other placings: 4 Rob Bullock, Chippenham, 8lb 2oz; 5 Steve Shiers, Melksham, 7lb 11oz;. 6 Stan Blackbourne, Melksham, 6lb 4oz.
Competitors enjoyed mixed fortunes in the Calne open match fished on Sunday at Hazeland, with the top few finding fish and the remainder struggling for bites.
Brian Pallant, of Newbury, won with a mixed catch of barbel and chub weighing 28lb 4oz.
Fish were hard to tempt in the inter-club match between Lavington and Airsprung, fished at Ellis Lake on Sunday when Lavington gained a comfortable win.
Individual honours went to Oliver Keats, of Airsprung, with a carp catch weighing 13lb 2oz, taken on feeder-fished red maggots on an 18 hook.
There was a tie for second place between Mark Williams, of Devizes, and Patrick Jay, of Trowbridge, both with carp catches weighing 8lb 10oz. Williams took his catch on pole-fished red maggots while Patrick took his on waggler-fished red maggots.
Other placings: 4 Don Keats, Hilperton, 8lb 8oz; 5 Terry Fell, Devizes, 5lb 8oz; 6 Tony Weeks, Lavington, 4lb 12oz.
