GET FIT FOR '05: SUE Sherwin is forgoing wine and munching her way through more fresh fruit.
And the 50-year-old credit controller, from Purton, feels far better for it.
She said: "I don't miss it I'm too busy keeping fit. I definitely feel healthier these days."
Sue is one of the Evening Advertiser's 12 Get Fit For '05 candidates, who are all determined to transform their life-styles this year.
This week the candidates met their team nutritionist Esther Maxfield at the Hilton Hotel, in West Swindon, to check up on their progress.
For the past fortnight Sue has been keeping a diary of all the food and drink she consumes.
Esther examined the results, rather like diet guru Gillian McKeith on the Channel 4 TV show You Are What You Eat.
She said: "Sue's diet has never been particularly bad. She doesn't eat junk food or sugary snacks.
"Her biggest downfall is wine, which is fine but only in moderation. Instead of having a whole bottle on Saturday night, she should have a glass in the evening with her dinner."
Esther's advice hinges on the principle that balancing blood sugar levels is the key to weight loss.
The carbohydrates in unrefined, natural foods release their energy slowly, without disrupting blood sugar levels. Eating protein together with a carbohydrate food also slows down the rate of digestion, resulting in low insulin levels, which encourage fat burning, discourage fat storage and naturally curb hunger.
So Sue is still eating three meals a day but limits her portion sizes. In between meals she maintains her sugar levels by eating a piece of fruit or vegetable sticks.
Esther, 33, from Old Town, said: "It's all about creating a healthy balance and keeping food as natural as possible.
"Instead of cutting out fat completely, candidates should be finding healthy sources of essential fats, like nuts and seeds."
Since embarking on her health kick, Sue has lost 7lbs and can fit into her size 14 jeans again.
She said: "It's a step in the right direction. Things are shaping up nicely and I'm sticking hard at it."
The candidates all have 12 months free gym membership, courtesy of the Living Well leisure club at the Hilton.
Sue works out there three times a week, which helps explain why she's feeling more honed and toned.
She said: "Going to the gym has become part of my routine. I never thought I would say this, but it's really good fun."
