The town centre is most certainly the only sensible option for the Bath University site.
My daughter is a student at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston. This university is spread throughout the town and is situated in buildings both old and modern.
The student accommodation is a mixture of new built on brownfield sites and old converted buildings and existing private houses, all within easy walking distance of the university and local amenities, which include both rail and bus links.
Why spoil our beautiful green countryside when you need look no further than our town centre?
We have brownfield sites and old empty buildings crying out for conversion. The university will breathe new life into the town centre.
If it works for Preston and other towns/cities then it can and will work for Swindon.
