At kick-off time, 2.30pm, just one point separated Chippenham and the current South West Two league leaders Reading Abbey.
By 4pm, though, the Reading side stretched the lead to three points after a bruising encounter at Allington Field.
A converted penalty try awarded to the visitors right on the stroke of full-time, stole the game 22-21, the points and possibly, the league title.
Chippenham went ahead with a penalty by Andy Williamson. From the restart, another break from Scott Sherratt saw him score for the first try of the game. Williamson added the conversion. Reading then came back with a try, quickly followed by a second.
Chippenham were awarded another penalty which was converted by Williamson.
Reading replied with another try, but Williamson kicked another penalty.
Chippenham winger Darren McMillan out-ran the defence to score, but Reading won with that penalty try in the final minutes.
