Swindon College Old Boys continued their winning ways with a 30-10 victory over fourth-placed Grove 2nds.

This saw them comfortably in second place in Berks Bucks & Oxon One South.

Third-placed Chinnor drew with Wheatley, and the Old Boys are now five points clear and looking forward to the play-offs at the end of the season.

The visitors drew first blood as a mis-cued chip forward found its way between the posts after only three minutes.

It was a short-lived advantage, however, as two minutes later the College forwards battled their way into their opponents' 22 and were awarded a scrum.

A swift hook from Mark Brown saw the ball at the feet of No 8 Tony Brant.

He drove into the defence to set the maul and captain and flanker John Godsell ripped the ball from his clutches, and wrestled through two defenders to score the home side's first try.

The extra two points being secured by full back Ben Robinson.

College commanded the set pieces with second row Chris Ebenezer taking everything in the lineout.

The visitors had little option but to kill the ball and the inevitable penalty came after 13 minutes with Robinson again slotting over the kick to give his side a 10-3 advantage.

On the half-hour the Old Boys got themselves into another scoring position with a carbon copy of the first when a scrum was awarded inside the Grove 22.

This time it was Brant who broke through the defence to score.

The score was unconverted but Mark Williams added three points soon after when, finding himself in the centre of the field and a full 30 metres from the try line, he sent a rare drop goal between the posts for an 18-3 lead.

An unfortunate injury to the Grove loosehead prop halted the game while an ambulance was called to ferry the injured forward to hospital.

He was given a clean bill of health and rejoined his colleagues after the match.

The 30-minute delay did neither side any favours as they resumed the second half cold, but it was Grove who found their form first as they overwhelmed the College defence to score a deserved try after 10 minutes which was converted to pull the score back to 18-10.

This seemed to be the jump-start the Old Boys needed as they also found their form with centre James Harman putting the game out of reach with two tries, the second of which was probably the best of the season.

A pass from stand-in scrum-half Luke Wills found Williams, who shipped the ball to Greig Evenett and in turn to Harman.

He chipped through and won the chase to the ball to score under the posts.
