MICK Harford has accepted the challenge of lifting rock-bottom Rotherham United back into the Championship and hopes both Town and the Millers will taste the joy of promotion in the not too distant future.
After just 46 days at the County Ground, Town's former assistant manager is heading north to try to lead relegated Rotherham back to a higher grade of football.
Speaking exclusively to the Evening Advertiser ahead of his official unveiling this morning, Harford spoke of his gratitude for the opportunity Andy King had provided him in Wiltshire.
He said: "I've really enjoyed my time with Swindon Town and I'll always be grateful to Andy King for giving me the opportunity to work with him and the players.
"The lads responded really well to me and it was terrific working with them to be honest.
"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Andy, the players and also the supporters for the way they reacted to me.
"There's no lack of ability at the club and if they don't manage to sneak into the play-offs this time then I think there's an opportunity next time, especially if the manager can keep the nucleus of his squad together."
The former Luton, Birmingham and Wimbledon striker has made no secret of his desire to manage again.
He said: "My decision to move on is no reflection on Swindon Town. I belief life is all about challenges and taking steps to test yourself. I felt I was ready to take that next step."
Harford was literally pulling into the Millmoor car park as he laid out his hopes for the future.
He said: "There's no question it's been a bad season for Rotherham but maybe there's also a sense of relief that it's all over."
Alan Knill and Mark Robins, who had been in charge of team affairs following Ronnie Moore's departure, will remain to assist Harford who has signed a two-year contract.
Rotherham chairman Peter Ruchniewicz said: "We are confident that we have the management team in place to enable the club to get back to the Championship as quickly as possible.
"Mick is highly motivated and experienced. He impressed all the directors and comes highly recommended from many knowledgeable observers in the game."
