GAZETTE & HERALD: CALNE has been praised as one of the most advanced and vibrant areas in Wiltshire by inspectors from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
They visited the town just before Christmas as part of Wiltshire County Council's effort to win Beacon Status for Getting Closer to the Community.
Coun Nancy Bryant said: "They were bowled over by the spectacular lantern parade and thought Calne was a wonderful town. I've got no doubt the visit went a long way towards helping us win Beacon Status."
Inspectors cited the redevelopment of the town centre and in particular the new library as playing a major role in boosting the morale of local people.
Coun Bryant said: "I'm absolutely over the moon. We have worked really hard on our community planning in Calne and I believe this has really invigorated the town and its people.
"We need to emphasise that this is a growing, vibrant town and I think this has acknowledged that."
Coun Bryant travelled to London to collect the Beacon Status award from Local Government Minister Nick Rainsford.
