A MIX up between workers at the Corn Exchange led to the building remaining unlocked all night. Devizes Town Council which owns the building, in the Market Place, said nothing was stolen from the building.
Procedures have now been tightened up.
Deputy town clerk Simon Fisher said the incident happened on a Thursday in March after an auction.
He said: "It was late and our member of staff told the bar franchisee to remember to lock the doors.
"The franchisee left via the fire exit and didn't check the front doors. The alarm was set and it was the following morning that staff found the doors were unlocked.
"Staff would normally have locked up but it had been a busy night. We have had a stern conversation with staff and a frank conversation with the bar franchisee. In future we will make sure our staff lock up in the evening. The incident is embarrassing more than anything. Nothing was missing. The bar was locked and a number of internal doors were also locked."
The council is looking into the possibility of installing CCTV cameras in the Corn Exchange and the town hall to improve security.
