THE outgoing High Sheriff of Wiltshire, James Arkell, joined firefighters in Swindon for a training day.
Mr Arkell, pictured, who is also managing director of Swindon-based Arkell's Brewery, spent the day with Wiltshire Fire Brigade as the guest of chief fire officer Andy Goves.
He and his wife met Mr Goves and the watch on duty at Swindon Fire Station in Grove Road.
Mr Arkell witnessed a training exercise by Blue Watch, who, using a hydraulic platform, practised a rescue from a high-rise building.
They then moved onto Stratton St Margaret Station where they were shown the water rescue equipment.
After that he visited Westlea fire station, where the party was given a presentation on road traffic collisions and the consequences of bad driving. The training day was part of a project that Wiltshire Fire Brigade has been involved with since September 2004.
