24647-36RESTORED Chaddington Lock, near Wootton Bassett, is set to receive its first boat for 100 years on Wednesday when a topping off ceremony takes place.

A blue and yellow ribbon will be cut at the lock and some of the last lock keeper's family will be there to witness the historic event.

The project marks a milestone in restoring the canal between Wootton Bassett and Swindon.

The lock has been restored entirely by Wilts and Berks Canal Trust volunteers over a two-year period.

Funding was provided by the canal trust, North Wiltshire District Council, other partners and a £87,000 Biffaward from landfill tax credit.

It is the latest stage in the restoration of the waterway that links the Kennet and Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames and Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne, Wootton Bassett, Swindon and Wantage.

North Wiltshire District Councillor Doreen Darby is chairman of the Canal Partnership and is delighted by the project's success.

"This is another success story on the canal and testimony of what can be achieved by good partnership working," she said.

"The high standard of skill and huge endeavour shown by the trust is for all to see."

Chaloner Chute, North Wiltshire District Council's canal officer, said there is a lot for supporters to celebrate."This is a special occasion because trust members will be able to see the fantastic results that they have achieved," he said.

"The canal unites communities which will one day stand to benefit from the completed restoration."

The next task of the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust is to restore the waterway to Hay Lane on the edge of Swindon.
