ABOUT 1867, John Edsall, the schoolmaster, doubled as village postman, receiving and despatching letters.
After he emigrated to Canada, the cottage opposite the turning into Woodgreen was converted into a post office, with new sub-postmaster Henry Duell in charge.
A purpose-built post office was constructed in 1914, which appeared on a postcard that came into the authors' possession.
It was postmarked December 21, 1914, and written on the back was the message: "PO Breamore, Salisbury, Wilts . . . good wishes for Xmas and the New Year. This is our new house; we have been in it for four months now.
"I have a very nice office and much more room and more convenient. I am in the doorway, with Father and my brother on either side of me.
"Two of our friends at the gate and Amy standing near the pram, with my sister Cissie's youngest child in it; he is now nine months old and a fine child . . . Patty Duell".
