AN application to chop down a beech tree in Amesbury town centre has been opposed by town councillors.
Councillors on Amesbury town council's planning and amenities committee agreed the tree, growing on land off Salisbury Road is a prominent feature at the entrance to the town and should remain.
The applicant wanted to fell the tree as the site is being re-developed but town councillors agreed to tell Salisbury district council that in their opinion it was a feature that should be retained.
Councillors welcomed an application to build 122 houses at Boscombe Down, the first phase of a new 550-home development and also gave their approval to a plan to build 15 new homes on land off Porton Road, Amesbury, with an access on to Butterfield Drive.
