Against the scheme Alan Hayward Picture Ref: 71459-11BATTLE FOR COATE: THE development of Coate has attracted fierce opposition from green campaigners.

Jean Saunders helped set up action group, Save Coate.

In February, 2004, a petition was launched.

So far, 16,000 people have signed it, formerly objecting to any development in the Coate area.

"I have seen these monstrous plans and they will spell disaster for this beauty spot that is extremely dear to thousands and thousands of local people," she said.

"Initially, it was thought only low-rise buildings would go up. That's not the understanding now.

"Whole views of this stunning landscape will be ruined."

Alan Hayward also staunchly opposes the development.

Last summer he formed Swindon Together on Planning (STOP) to help give residents a clearer view on local planning issues.

He believes that a university is essential for Swindon's growth, but believes developers have snubbed alternative suggestions.

"If it was a small development tucked away next to Great Western Hospital there would not have been anywhere near as much outrage," said Mr Hayward, chief organiser.

"We found five alterative sites in the town centre. And 75 per cent of that space is owned by Swindon Borough Council.

"It's my opinion that the council has not done enough to promote other sites.

"The University of Bath said it would not come to Swindon if it didn't get Coate.

"Swindon Borough Council should have told them to go and destroy some other town's countryside not ours."
