STEVE White's men are proving life at the top isn't easy after Aylesbury became the first team to complete the double over Chippenham on Saturday.

A late brace from inspirational captain Gary Thorne was not enough to fend off the physical Ducks.

White was frustrated with the result and admitted that Chippenham were second best in all departments.

He said: "We were fortunate only to get away with 3-2, we only put in the effort in the last 20 minutes. They had more desire and we did not deserve a point."

Fortunately, Chippenham were let off the hook again in the title race as Histon crashed to their third defeat in four games, losing 2-0 at Team Bath.

The Bluebirds have a one point lead but have now played the same number of games as their rivals as the season enters the final straight.

He added: "Histon lost but we have to concentrate on ourselves.

"We now have to look at the next game against Bedford, it is a six pointer for them and us.

"We have to try and maintain the gap and it will need a blood and guts performance on Saturday."

The Chippenham players failed to get out of the starting blocks for the first 70 minutes and by that time they were three goals down.

They struggled to contain forward Drew Roberts who tormented the defence with his penetrating runs down the flanks.

The hosts showed a fantastic work rate as the defence made several runs up field to support the striker.

Aylesbury's first came after just 16 minutes when Roberts broke down the right flank.

His pace saw him reach the by line where he delivered a perfect cross that narrowly avoided the back pedalling defenders and fell straight into the path of right back Greg Williams as he arrived on the back post to side foot in.

Chippenham hardly troubled home keeper Jack Rashid and on the half hour mark the lead was doubled.

It came after another tantalising cross from Roberts but this time it was defender Daniel French who smashed in from close range.

The visitors failed to respond and continued to allow their hosts to come forward in the second half.

It was just a matter of time before their third goal came as it didn't look like Chippenham had the spark to open up the Aylesbury defence.

In the 72nd minute the home side went further into the lead when Ellis Wilmot lost the ball in his own half and French pounced.

He skilfully took on three Bluebirds before unleashing a thunderous shot into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards.

Chippenham then woke up but unfortunately it was too late.

Their first goal came just six minutes later when Wilmot crossed for captain Thorne to head in.

The defender was the only Chippenham player that showed desire to win the game and made several late runs into the box.

He saw a second header in the 85th minute go narrowly over from another dangerous Wilmot cross.

And he grabbed Chippenham's second in injury time when he linked up with midfielder Wilmot again to send another header flying into the net.

But it arrived in the 94th minute and was nothing more than a consolation as the referee blew up for full time moments later.
