Furious residents in Malmesbury say a proposed application to build five terraced houses in a conservation area is gross overdevelopment.
Mark Rodgers, who has lived in the town for 28 years, wants to build the houses on an acre of land at Kings Wall in Malmesbury.
He has also submitted an application to demolish his existing bungalow as part of the development.
But angry neighbours expressed their concern at a planning meeting at the town hall on Monday night.
Businessman Tim Harvey said residents were concerned about the narrow road along Kings Wall becoming a bottle neck for traffic because of extra cars from the development.
He also said the proposal raised safety hazards for children playing around the area.
Objector James Castle said: "Kings Wall is a conservation area. This development would turn the whole area into a beehive for traffic. It is an area of Malmesbury which is intrinsically quiet.
Malmesbury Town Council has objected to both applications from Mr Rodgers, and the matter will now be dealt with the planning committee at North Wiltshire District Council.
