A VISIT to poverty stricken parts of Nepal has inspired Urchfont couple Jacqui and James Monckton to try and raise funds to pay for a schoolteacher in the Himalayas by holding a charity dance.
Both teachers themselves, the parents of three, of Poynings Cuckoo Corner, visited youngest son Matthew on his journey to Nepal in 2003 and were struck by scenes of children breaking stones on roads, making rubble and trying to earn enough to purchase some food.
"When we asked our guide Ram what could be done to change the situation, he said education was the most important way forward," said Mrs Monckton, who is head of Dauntseys Aided Primary School in West Lavington
Organisers hope to raise £1,000 for a group called the Himalayan Trust who are involved in a number of Nepalese development programs, and the seemingly modest figure is enough to pay a schoolteacher in Nepal for a whole year.
The 18-piece DS Big Band will have everyone swinging late into the evening at the Devizes Sports Club on June 3. Tickets cost £15, which includes a curry supper, and are available at the club or from (01380) 840782.
