THE first in a series of police-backed discos for teenagers in Marlborough was a huge success on Tuesday.
More than 100 youngsters aged 13 to 16 attended the Bluez 'n' Zuz disco at the Azuza nightclub in Hughenden Yard, off the High Street.
Club owners Andrew Moyes and Mark Gent have given their premises for the fortnightly discos that police have helped organise.
They were partly the idea of Marlborough's new police section commander Jerry Dawson and Sgt Mark Freeman supported by a number of the town's officers.
Insp Dawson together with Community Support Officer John Bordiss and some PCs were at the opening night on Tuesday and were thrilled with the response.
CSO Bordiss, whose role includes working with the younger section of the community, said the teenagers enjoyed it and want to go again. "It has been a fantastic success," he said.
Father-of-two Insp Dawson said: "It's great to see so many kids having a good time."
The inspector and the other officers wore T shirts and jeans and joined in the dancing at times.
Mr Moyes said he was amazed at the large number of youngsters who attended and said: "To get over 100 on the first night was phenomenal.
"I have heard that some other youth events in the town have only had about eight or ten along so we were really thrilled to see so many."
The next disco will be on April 26 from 6.30pm to 9pm.
