I REFER to the letter from R Fisher of Wroughton (Apr 7) stating that recycling is a waste of money.

I could not disagree more. Recycling has become an essential process.

Recycling is not cheap but neither is landfill and the money the council is spending is necessary to help the long-term protection of our environment and the preservation of ever-dwindling natural resources.

I can understand R Fisher's frustration about whether or not High Street, Wroughton, is included in the scheme, and I'm sure this will be clarified. There are bound to be teething problems with the introduction of recycling on this scale and, as the Advertiser has reported, there has been confusion relating to changes in collections.

But Swindon Council and Swindon Services should be commended for their recent improvements to the household collection for recyclables, and I hope the full scheme will be extended to the whole of the borough.

It is now up to residents to support the scheme and ensure its success.
