Jon Lewis endorsed his England credentials with an impressive performance with bat and ball as Gloucestershire took command on the second day at the Rose Bowl.
Lewis, not known for his batting, hit an entertaining knock of 40 in Gloucestershire's first-innings total of 221 then produced two superb deliveries to remove Australian Simon Katich and Derek Kenway in the final session.
Steve Kirby and James Averis also took two wickets as Hampshire closed the day on 111-6 only 87 runs ahead with four wickets remaining in their second innings.
The home side had done well to restrict the visitors to just a 24-run lead earlier with Shane Warne and Billy Taylor taking three wickets each.
Gloucestershire had resumed on 118-2, trailing Hampshire by just 81 runs, but they were quickly in trouble in their reply.
Captain Warne led the way by removing night watchman Averis in the fourth over with just seven further runs on the board.
Gloucestershire captain Chris Taylor and Tim Hancock soon followed before Hampshire's Taylor took over with three quick wickets.
The fast-medium bowler accounted for Alex Gidman, Steve Adshead and Mark Hardinges in rapid succession to leave the visitors precariously placed on 160-8.
Lewis joined Kadeer Ali at the crease and the pair put on 49 for the ninth wicket to take their team into a first-innings lead.
But the innings lost momentum after a 22-over rain break and Hampshire wasted no time in taking the final two wickets when play resumed.
Kadeer's gritty innings of 33 from 144 balls, which failed to feature a single boundary, was finally ended when he was caught behind.
Lewis had entertained the sparse crowd hitting seven fours and a six from only 37 deliveries when he became last man out to become Richard Logan's first victim since joining Hampshire from Nottinghamshire in the close season.
Hampshire began well with openers from James Adams and Michael Brown making untroubled progress as they put on 44 in steady fashion.
