MIDFIELDER Matt Hewlett is already attracting interest from other clubs after rejecting the chance to stay at the County Ground.

The 29-year-old midfielder has rejected the deal offered by Andy King as 'unacceptable' not that there is any animosity between manager and player.

While the money on offer, or lack of it, is a factor, Hewlett simply feels the time is right for a fresh challenge.

Hewlett, who has clocked up 200 appearances for Town, said: "I've had a chat with the gaffer about things. We all know his budget is very tight and that he hasn't too much room for manoeuvre.

"The deal proposed wasn't acceptable to me and it's time to start afresh I suppose.

"I didn't see any point in messing about. The gaffer and I were very honest with each other.

"There have been plenty of ups and downs during my five years here and we came so, so close to achieving something last year.

"It was great to be part of that and the fact that I've been a regular for the vast majority of my time here, as well as being captain, is also something I can look back on with pride.

"I've spoken to my agent and it seems I have a few options to consider, which is obviously pleasing."

Meanwhile, sources close to Bristol City suggest that Brian Tinnion sees Matt Heywood as the man to bolster his central defensive options.

The Ashton Gate club have little cover in that area and Heywood's performance in Wednesday's goalless draw with Town will hardly have discouraged the City boss.
